The beekeepers across Scotland were urged to be attentive to signs of disease. This happened after a bee disease outbreak was found in an apiary in West Lothian.
SASA – Science and Advice for Scottish Agriculture, conducted a laboratory diagnosis and confirmed the bee disease outbreak – a case of European Foulbrood (EFB). In fact, this is a disease that spreads between hives. It is mostly transferred by beekeepers through their equipment which got contaminated. However, good hygiene and beekeeping can prevent the spread.
The Chief Veterinary Officer for Scotland, Shelia Voas, said:
“This confirmation of EFB in Scottish bees is a timely reminder that bee farmers and beekeepers should be vigilant for signs of diseases as they go through their hives, they should maintain good husbandry practices at all times and notify any suspicion of disease to Scottish government bee inspectors.”
